Sweden coach Janne Andersson said England are capable of winning the World Cup after seeing his side beaten 2-0 by Gareth Southgate's side in the quarter-finals today.

England will meet hosts Russia or Croatia on Tuesday for a spot in the final, after goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli sent through to the last four of the competition for the first time since 1990.

"Yes, I definitely believe they are. They're strong and well-organised. I'd like to pay tribute to both the team and the coach. They're a good football side, they don't give a lot of openings. I believe they are perfectly capable of going all the way,"Andersson responded when asked if England were good enough to win the tournament.

For Sweden, who failed to qualify for the previous two World Cups, it was their best result since finishing third at the 1994 finals.

"We came through to the quarter-finals in a World Cup. I think we performed really well to get here, we just weren't good enough to beat this side today," Andersson said.

After Harry Maguire opened the scoring in the 30th minute at the Samara Arena on Saturday, Alli doubled the lead after the break as Gareth Southgate's young squad continued to defy dampened pre-tournament expectations with another confident display.

England were almost made to pay straight after the interval and would have been pegged back if Pickford had not produced a top-drawer save to keep out a Berg header. The killer blow, however, arrived in the 59th minute as Jesse Lingard's teasing cross into the box was met by Alli unmarked at the far post to head powerfully past Olsen.

England had not kept a clean sheet in their four previous matches and had their goalkeeper Pickford to thank for ensuring they did not concede this time. The keeper saved superbly from Viktor Claesson before tipping a shot from Berg over the bar and that was enough to ensure Swedish hopes of reaching their first semi-final since 1994 were dashed.

England defeated Sweden 2-0 in the quarter-final and the win will always be remembered for a funny fact. Out of the 23 players of the English squad, at least 17 were not born on the previous occasion England reached the semifinals (1 July 1990) in the FIFA World Cup.
