For one who was praised by Michael Schumacher for his driving skill, Vitantonio Liuzzi’s career hasn’t really taken off since he made his Formula One debut in 2005. Liuzzi got a chance to carve his niche when Force India on Monday offered him the race seat vacated by Giancarlo Fisichella who switched to Ferrari last week. The remaining five races of the season will be crucial to Liuzzi’s Formula One career.

“Although it’s unfortunate that this came about as a result of Felipe’s accident but this is my opportunity to show people what I can do and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Liuzzi, who will make a comeback in Monza, his home Grand Prix, this weekend.

This is a perfect opportunity for former reserve driver Liuzzi with Force India showing excellent pace at the Belgium Grand Prix to claim their first points in 30 races. But after Fisichella’s second-place finish at Spa, expectations will be higher as well. Liuzzi has to be consistent and make sure he doesn’t repeat the mistakes he made during his time with Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

“Force India now have a great car that’s performing very well. I am confident I can carry on our progress. I’m very motivated and hungry to get more points on the board. I can’t wait to get back into the car in race trim, particularly at my home Grand Prix in Monza. I really appreciate the opportunity Vijay has given me,” said Liuzzi, who last raced in 2007 for Toro Rosso at the Chinese Grand Prix, finishing sixth.

Owner Vijay Mallya also feels Liuzzi can continue the good work. “I’m delighted to give Tonio the opportunity to get back into a race seat, which I know he has been itching to do for the past two years. Force India are now in a very competitive position and we need a driver who can continue this momentum. This will be the chance for Tonio to demonstrate to both the team and the field that he has the commitment, speed and professionalism to perform and I am sure he will seize this opportunity,” Mallya said.
