A year after joining them, India striker Sunil Chhetri’s stint with Sporting Kansas City (formerly Kansas City Wizards) looks to be coming to an abrupt end.

Chhetri is one of the three international players who most likely will not be with the Major League Soccer side for the upcoming MLS season, club sources told DNA.

The reason for Chhetri’s apparent exclusion is that he is yet to break into the 18-man roster of Kansas. With only four international players allowed in each team in the MLS, Kansas will have an option of replacing Chhetri with another international player who can feature in the playing 11.

An official announcement by Kansas head coach Peter Vermes on Chhetri’s status is expected in the next few weeks. “We can expect the announcement after India’s Asian Cup campaign is over,” the source informed.

Chhetri’s agent Yogesh Joshee, however, insisted the striker was very much with Kansas. “Sunil is still very much a Kansas player. I have heard no such thing,” he said.

Chhetri’s move to MLS hasn’t exactly gone according to the plan since his debut for the club in April. Since then, he has played in friendly matches, most notably against Manchester United. But he has had a difficult time to adapt to the pace and physicality of the game in the United States.

On Monday, Australia’s A-League side Perth Glory said they were interested in Chhetri and that they will be monitoring his performance at the Asian Cup.

Talks are on with the West Australian club but the player’s agent said it is still very early to talk about Chhetri’s association with Glory.
