Sports scribes' body mourns Peter Roebuck's death

The Sports Journalists' Federation of India (SJFI) Sunday mourned the death of Peter Roebuck, player-turned-cricket writer, who died in South Africa.

In a condolence message, SJFI president S Sabanayakan said: “Roebuck made one fall in love with cricket with his style of writing. He wrote about the game generously, critically and fearlessly."

Sabanayakan recalled that Roebuck had the habit of moving around in the press box, “listening with intent to the journalists of all ages, speaking intensely in his soft voice, which was sharp and quick”.

“He spoke generously to young reporters and writers and stressed on writing in one’s own voice.”

Sabanayakan said Roebuck will be remembered for long for his contribution to the game through his writings. “There can never be one like him. Peter Roebuck RIP!"

Roebuck, aged 55, died early Sunday at his hotel in Newlands, Cape Town where he was covering the current Test series between Australia and South Africa.
