Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer continued his fine form in Ranji Trophy as he struck an unbeaten 66 against Tamil Nadu on Day Two of the Ranji Trophy Super League encounter at India Cements ground on Thursday. However, Tamil Nadu bounced back by taking two late wickets.

At the close of play, the defending champions were 180 for four with Jaffer and middle-order batsman Prashant Naik (8 not out) at the crease. Veteran Tamil Nadu seamer L Balaji was the pick of the bowlers with two scalps.

After the opening day’s play was abandoned due to a wet outfield, the second day’s play was delayed by a session.

Mumbai, who chose to bat first, did not have a great start to their innings, losing opener Omkar Gurav to seamer Balaji in the third over of the day for a duck. In-form Sahil Kukreja took time to settle down, but he could not consolidate and was sent packing by left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas for a 43-ball 17, leaving Mumbai tottering at 32 for two.

It was left to the third-wicket pair of skipper Jaffer and Rahane to do the rescue act. The duo has been in a great form and once again helped Mumbai recover from a difficult situation with a good partnership.

Rahane looked in good form to register another three-figure mark as he struck four boundaries and a six before his innings was cut short by Balaji at 49. The two were involved in a 95-run stand for the third wicket.

South-paw Abhishek Nayar played a short cameo, scoring 20 off just 30 balls, with two sixes and a four, before he was trapped leg before by Suresh Kumar.

Meanwhile, Jaffer continued his domination over the Tamil Nadu bowlers. The stylish batsman, who has demoted himself to the middle-order this season, was gritty in his approach and went on to make his second half-century of the season. At the end of the day his score read 66 off 150 balls with five boundaries and a six.
