NEW DELHI: It was a comprehensive verdict for VM Ranjeet in this match as well as in the DSCL National Men’s Championship. He was truly the most consistent player on view, his 6-3 6-4 victory over NS Balaji, a continuation of the way in which Ranjeet won matches, that is without dropping a set.
“I had backed myself to win even though I took it match by match. I was confident going into the final, served well today and kept pressure on Balaji,” said Ranjeet.
Ranjeet played fluently from early on and managed a break in the fourth game with Balaji failing to keep the ball in consistently. Ranjeet managed another one in the sixth before Balaji broke back in the seventh. But Balaji could not change the tempo, struggling to hold in the eighth game and going down without a fight in the second set after losing the third game on his serve.
“I am happy to have been so consistent in the tournament. The confidence of beating quite a few players with ATP rankings around 400 and 450 provided me with an edge over other players,” said Ranjeet.
“Seeing the depleted field, I sensed an opportunity but now feel something was really missing here. When I was playing the under-18 nationals, I used to see all the top players in the fray in the seniors’ tournament,” Ranjeet said, who has been playing in the German league for two years.
A lot of players did not turn up for this edition after the prize money was reduced drastically, with the winner assured of Rs. 30,000 in comparison to last year’s Rs.1,00,000.
Also, the wild card for the Chennai ATP event that had been initially promised, was withdrawn at the last moment.
