The technical committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday will brainstorm about some revolutionary changes to the domestic structure, Ranji Trophy and other tournaments. If approved, the national championship could do away with the existing Elite and Plate formats.

Sourav Ganguly is the head of the committee while Anil Kumble is a special invitee for the meeting.

In place of the current two-division Ranji format, the proposal is to hold the championship in one division with teams divided into three groups. Each group will have nine teams. Group A will consist of winners, runners-up and seven top teams of the two Elite groups. Group B will have the remaining teams of the Elite groups and top three teams of the Plate Group. Group C will consist of remaining nine teams in the Plate Group. The eight quarterfinal knockout teams will comprise three qualifiers each from Group A and B and two from the Group C.

As per the promotion and elevation, two bottom-placed teams of Group A will be demoted to Group B, two top teams in Group B will be promoted to Group A, two bottom-placed teams in Group B get relegated to Group C and the top two teams in Group C get promotion to Group B. There is no plan to hold the matches on neutral grounds.

The Ranji matches will start in the first week of November and preferably, they will be held in the weekends. This means one team will have rest every week and no game will be scheduled when an international match is played at a venue. Six points, as against current five, will be awarded for an outright win and three points each in case of a tie in both innings.

Duleep Trophy will lose its zonal structure. It will be between three teams — Ranji champions and two teams to be picked by the selectors. There is also an option of inviting a foreign team.  The Challenger Trophy will have the winners of the Vijay Hazare Trophy with two more teams picked by the selectors.
