Hours after the defeat against England which ended their hopes of retaining the World Twenty20 title, the Indian team had hit the road.

They were travelling on Monday from London to Nottingham for Tuesday’s last Super Eights fixture against South Africa. There was little time for a formal postmortem but indications are that the boys want to put behind the disappointment as quickly as possible and refocus. A member of the contingent said the players are concentrating on the match against South Africa.

“They are all professionals. They are concentrating on tomorrow’s match against South Africa,” team manager V Chamundeswarnath said. The players, according to him, are disappointed but “are moving on”.

The team is not yet aware of the clamour for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s head in a section of the media. But the Indian skipper is not likely to lose his sleep over it. According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India and its selection committee, there is no immediate threat to Dhoni’s position.

The BCCI has no immediate plans anyway to do a postmortem as it had done after the 2007 World Cup debacle.

The team will soon fly to the West Indies for a four-match ODI series. BCCI secretary N Srinivasan refused to comment on whether there would be a formal review of the performance.

Some review, of course, is likely to happen when the selection committee meets on Wednesday to pick the squad for the four-match ODI series in the Caribbean islands.
With a couple of selectors in England, the squad will be chosen over teleconference and Dhoni will most certainly be retained as the skipper for the series. The first ODI is on June 26 in Kingston.

Meanwhile, there has been no decision on players’ return. The team was to leave from London to the Caribbean on June 21 for the ODI series. Now that the team is out of the tournament, their travel plans are being worked out. “It is a logistical issue and we are working it out. We will decide in a couple of days,” Srinivasan, who is also in London, said.
