New Delhi could pick up a few tips from Chicago in involving the masses for international sporting events. While New Delhi is preparing for the Commonwealth Games 2010, Chicago is gearing up for the Olympics 2016.

Chicago as a candidate for the 2016 Olympic Games is resonating in America like an anthem these days. Although a final decision on who would host the Games is four months away, President Barack Obama’s home city already looks like a winner.
A New Delhi-Chicago flight, that this correspondent was on this week, devoted significant time to the US city’s bid for Olympics on its in-house channel. And at the O Hare airport, the message urging people to support Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Games was all across.

Obama’s video recorded speech of last year, backing Chicago, is being used liberally to drive across the message, apart from large-scale print campaign.

Even as Commonwealth Games are so close, airlines and airports of the country are still not vigourously showcasing the forthcoming event.

Meanwhile, on June 23, a celebration has been scheduled in the US, to demonstrate support for Chicago, the Olympic campaign has gained pace even more, some people tracking the issue informed the DNA. On June 23, 100 American cities would come together to host sporting events, fun runs and concerts on the beaches to celebrate Chicago’s bid.

Besides Chicago, others in the race for hosting the 2016 Games are Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

An official website has already been launched on Chicago as a strong candidate for the 2016 Games. The site lists everything from Olympic news to proposed venues for the Games, on the bids to host the Games to business opportunities that it may offer.

Ironically, back home in India, the broadcaster for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is yet to be firmed up. Also, many other pending issues need to be sorted out for the 2010 Games.
