Heavy rain and slushy ground conditions did not deter enthusiastic 14-year-old boys from Bombay Scottish (Mahim) to register a 1-0 win in their opening match against OL Salvation (Dadar) in the MSSA inter-school tournament held at Azad Maidan on Saturday.

The boys from Scottish could have scored three goals in less than eight minutes but only one of their three attempts found the back of the net; the other two missed the target by a whisker.

Scottish right forward Veer Pinto scored the winner goal after missing an opportunity to score in the first half. OLS gave Scottish a tough fight on the field. Both teams tried hard but the water-logged ground was not conducive for a good game.

The game started with only a drizzle and both teams had a fair chance to win. However, luck favoured the Scottish boys as they got the drier side of the ground in the rain-dominated second half.

The sports master of OLS, SR Shinde said, “They should have postponed the game. The ground conditions were not good. In the second half we were totally handicapped as water was on our side. We were at a disadvantage and that affected our chances of winning.”
