MUMBAI: Karen Mistry, daughter of India’s former sprint champion Rachita Mistry, set the only state record, on the opening day of the 20th YMCA Open Junior Athletic meet at the University ground here on Saturday.

She had equalled the state record in the 50m heats, scorched the record in the final with clocking 7.6 seconds, after a pep talk from parents Rachita and Homiyar. Shruti Hegde of Mumbai held the old record (7.8 secs), set at the Kolhapur state meet in 2000.

Karen, representing FSI Athletic Club, was way ahead from  the second and third place finishers, Roshini Dadachandji of Ace Athletic Club and Akshaya Iyer of TMC-Thane. Both clocked an identical 8.2 secs. Now, Karen holds the state records in the girls’ under-8 (8.2sec in 2003) and under-10 (7.6 sec in 2005) 50m race.

This was followed by four meet records, two each in the girls’ and boys’ sections. Jaya Phatak (u-16 high jump), Krutika Lad (u-12 long jump) among girls and Sabha Bhagat (under14, long jump) and Guddu Yadav (u-18 3000m) among boys broke the marks.

National inter-district champion Jai Phatak of VPM Sports Club, Dahisar, continued her winning streak with another victory which was capped with a meet record in the girls’ u-16 high jump event.

She cleared a height of 1.48m. Leanne Pavri gave her a tough fight but could manage only 1.45m which was still better than the old meet record of 1.41m set by Natasha D’Souza.

Her mother’s daughter

MUMBAI: She is too young to remember her age. But she knows the records of her event. Karen Mistry, only 9, set the only state record at the State Open Athletics meet on Saturday.

With her rhythmic strides and prefect style, Karen turned out to be the darling of the crowd. Why not — her meet record speaks for itself. This Standard V student from the Girton Hish School, Grant Road, is no doubt, the future of Indian athletics.

Coming from a family of athletes — internationals Homiyar and Rachita Mistry — Karen is just one year into competitive athletics. She has two records to her credit already.

“She is doing well and I hope she continues to do so in bigger leagues,” says Olympian Rachita, who had broken PT Usha’s 100m and 200m national records.

Karen works with her mother at the Priyardarshini Sports Complex every evening. “She (Karen) has been coming for work outs since she was five. It was last year when she got the taste of competition. It is nice to hear that she has set records,” says Rachita.

While Homiyar is on the field boosting the morale of his daughter, Rachita sits far away in the stands jotting down all her follies. Family support will get you everywhere.
