Mumbai-based swimmer Jyotsana Pansare who flunked in the recent dope test ahead of the Commonwealth Games, claims she is innocent.

She blamed the lack of awareness for landing into the current dope mess.

Three Indian swimmers Richa Mishra, Jyotsana Pansare and Amar Muralitharan tested positive for the banned substance methylhexaneamine. Mishra and Pansare were both members of India’s 26-member aquatic squad for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

“After winning several medals at national and state level, no athlete would take such a stupid step. Moreover, as per the Indian Federation of Sports Medicine, the banned substance can be found in the cooking oil too. It is the responsibility of SAI and SFI, to create awareness amongst athletes,” said Jyotsana’s mother Archana, while talking to DNA.

“We have sacrificed everything for her career. We even sent her to Florida, United States for better training. And, now when she is supposed to practice hard for CWG, we are busy fighting for justice,” she added.

If the swimmers test positive in their sample ‘B’ test too, then Mishra and Pansare will be dropped from the Indian team. However, Archana is determined to fight till the last.

“We are ready to fight any legal battle and we won’t stop until we get justice,” said Archana.

Meanwhile, Indian Federation of Sports Medicine president P S M Chandran supported the swimmer’s claims that there was a lack of an awareness programme.

“The substance is found in cooking oil and even in medicine for common cold. It is also commonly available in powder form. It is not the athletes, but the lack of an awareness programme which should be held responsible for this,” said Chandran.

“We talk about doping a lot, but we are yet to implement a proper programme alert for the athletes about such banned substances. Till then the innocent players will get punished and nothing can be done about it,” he added.
