On his wedding tonight, former cricketers hoped that Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni would bring home the cricket World Cup inspired by the turning point in his life.
"I am sure his marriage will make him do better at the World Cup. I hope Dhoni (if he gets the captain's job) brings the World Cup home a second time," former Ranji cricketer and former Bihar Cricket Association vice-president Daval Sahai said.
Dhoni's former coach Chanchal Bhattacharya said "his childhood sweetheart, Sakshi Singh Rawat, must have inspired him to pick up the bat to become the darling of Indian cricket and might nudge him to place his hand on the next World Cup."
Dhoni's former Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) team captain and a serving official in the public sector, Adil Hussain, said, "He knows what system works for him. He keeps well behind the wickets. He will also do well as a husband. Just wait and see how his marriage brings much needed luck to his game," Hussein, a former Bihar Ranji captain, said.
Ashok Ghosh, former Bihar Ranji player whose record of ten catches in a Ranji tie against Assam in 1980 still stands in first class cricket, said "normally marriage heralds a new dawn in every one's life. Therefore the graph of the number one one-day batsman's performance will go up."
Former left-arm spinner KVP Rao, who has 212 first class wickets to his credit said, "The stumper knows his field placements in matters pertaining to life too. And, at least now there will be somebody to look after him."
A former practice partner of the skipper, Om Ranjan Malviya, said lightly, "Dhoni is relieved from page-3-type gossip now."
CCL's deputy manager (public relations), Deepak Kumar, said, "We congratulate him and his about-to-be wife a long and happy married life."
Former Jharkhand deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto also extended his greetings and wished Dhoni success.
Fans in Ranchi burst crackers and distributed sweets as news spread about his marriage.
