'Delhi Celebrates' to light up city for Commonwealth Games

The "Delhi Celebrates" festival, which will see action from the country's finest performers, will showcase to the world India's unique cultural heritage and traditions.

The city is all set to host one of the biggest expositions of the country's diverse art, music, dance, cinema, theatre and cuisine in the next two months as part of celebrations for the Commonwealth Games.

The "Delhi Celebrates" festival, which will see action from the country's finest performers, will showcase to the world India's unique cultural heritage and traditions. 

"It is going to be an iconic festival in the history of art and culture. We will present a huge number of programmes to cater to everybody's taste. Top performers from across the country will participate in the programmes," chief minister Sheila Dikshit said, launching a calender for the festival.

15 different agencies including Delhi government, ministry of culture, Archaeological Survey of India, National School of Drama and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts are organising the Festival.

Addressing the gathering, Secretary, Union culture ministry Jawhar Sircar said that "Delhi Celebrates" will be "the largest single exposition of culture in history of India".

Different organisations have come together and finalised the programmes under guidance of Dikshit as desired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said.

"Last year, when I had submitted the file to the prime minister describing about our plan for cultural events during the Games, it came back to me within two days with a note that finalise the events as per guidance of Dikshit," Sircar said and urged the Delhi Government to organise the event annually.

The festival will be kick started tomorrow at Dilli Haat where all the states will present their cultural events and will conclude on November 4.

Theatre lovers can feast on celebrated plays such as 'Kaifi aur Main' featuring Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, 'Ghalib' featuring Tom Alter in the lead role and 'Eidgah' based on a story by  renowned Urdu writer Munshi Premchand as a part of 'Jashn-e-Dilli' programme at the Jamia Milia Islamia from September 18 to October 4.

But this is not all, the lovers of 'mushairas', 'ghazals' and 'qawallis' can also savour performances by some of the best artistes at the Town Hall in the historic Chandni Chowk.
