Deepchand Saharan wins first title in Mayor's marathon

The Mayor's marathon was jointly organised by the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation and Vasai Taluka kala Krida Mandal on Sunday.

Deepchand Saharan and Kiran Tiwari grabbed the first prize in the open full marathon for men and half marathon for women, respectively, in the Mayor's marathon jointly organised by the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation and Vasai Taluka kala Krida Mandal on Sunday.

The marathon was flagged off at 7:00am from Viva College by track and field legend PT Usha and in the presence of Asiad and commonwealth Games medalist Kavita Raut, Hema Bhanga who recently bagged three gold medals in the World Police Sports Tournament, former Mumbai mayor Shubha Raul and VVMC mayor Rajiv Patil. Later, hockey legend Dhanaraj Pillay, Yuvraj Valmiki came to cheer the participants with other celebrities like Mahima Chaudhary, Deepali Sayyed and Kranti Redkar.  

But in men's open marathon, Deepchand clocked 2:28.03 to win the first title and to grab the prize of Rs1 lakh, while Kiran Tiwari, who clocked 1.18.21, won the first title in the women's half marathon grabbing the prize of Rs51,000.

The event not only attracted the participants but also the local residents to cheer them as it was the first marathon being organised in the twin cities. Around 5000 participants took part in the marathon including all categories.

Bhasker Kamble from Vashim clocked 2:37.06 to win in the men's category and finished second in the marathon with Chandrapur's Nilesh Bodhe coming home in 2:40.50. Kamble and Bodhe took home Rs75,000 and Rs50,000 respectively.

Deepchand, after winning the title, said, "The course was flat and smooth and the event was well organised." "Even the support and enthusiasm of the spectators was such that I had not experienced it before," he added.

Results: Men (Open) (42 km) - 1. Deepchand Saharan (Pune) 2.28.03, 2. Bhaskar Kamble (Vashim) 2.37.26, 3. Nilesh Bodhe (Chandrapur) 2.39.16.

Women (Half marathon) (21 km) - 1. Kiran Tiwari (Western Railway) 1.18.21, 2. Lalita Babar 1.19.23, 3. Priya Thoke (Mumbai) 1.20.25.
