Birmingham City have signed goalkeeper Ben Foster from Manchester United on a three-year-deal for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League clubs said on Wednesday.

England international Foster, 27, has rarely featured in the United team due to Dutch stalwart Edwin van der Sar's fine form late on in his career at Old Trafford.

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish believes Foster can have the same impact at the Midlands club as Joe Hart, who enjoyed a successful season at St Andrews on loan from Manchester City.

"It looks as if we've got another great acquisition with Ben Foster," said McLeish. "The goalkeeper is a massive position and we believe he is of the same kind of standard as Joe Hart," he added on the club's website (www.bcfc.com.)
