It’s the kingmaker who uses his influence and power to make a king victorious. In the same manner, Astle Pereira and Alban Fernandes proved to be the kingmakers of their respective teams.
Astle was brilliant on the field when his school St Stanislaus, Bandra, took over St Francis D’Assisi ‘A’, Borivli. Known for playing classic football, the Stanislaus players failed to combine well in the beginning. They looked nervous and ended up losing the possession of the ball way too often. After a goalless first half, the boys in yellow were back on track.

Stanislaus’ centre stopper Abdulla Latif gave them their much-needed first goal. He shot without much hope from a distance of almost 40 metres and was lucky to find the net. Aidan Gresseux scored the next goal by kicking the ball to the top corner of the net. A third goal by Astle was disallowed by the referee, claiming it to be offside. Stanislaus won the game 2-0.

Their goal scorers Abdulla and Aidan praised Astle for his extremely good passes. Last year’s under-14 champions said that they played poorly in the first half as this was their first game as under-16 players. “Our coach told us not to get nervous, to play hard, be strong and clear the ball first time. We won the game as we played better in the last 30 minutes,” they added.

In the game that followed, St Dominic Savio, Andheri, played against St Anne’s High School, Malad. Dominic scored an early first goal and defended well thereafter to win 1-0. Their defender Alban was outstanding and his many tackles helped Dominic earn a well deserved victory. Their coach, Nazario Coutinho said the wet ground conditions proved to be a hindrance in scoring the goals. “There was good man to man marking and also first time clearances. We missed a lot of chances. We could have at least won by a 4-0 margin. We couldn’t carry the ball because of the ground conditions,” he concluded.
