Suresh Kalmadi has been re-elected as the president of the Asian Athletic Association for the third consecutive year and taking his first step towards getting the international events to the country, he has got a nod to host the Asian Grand Prix Athletic Meet in Pune on June 5 next year.

“I am happy that people in the Asian circuit have put faith in me. I will continue to do the best for athletics in Asia,” said Kalmadi, while talking to DNA after the 18th General Body meeting, which was held in Guangzhou, China on Monday. “There are many big events coming up next year. Besides the Commonwealth Games in October, we will also have a test run with the two-day All Star meet on August 29-30,” stated Kalmadi.
Taking note from International Amateur Athletic Federation president Lamine Diack, Kalmadi has stressed the need to look into the school athletics.

The main issue on the agenda was election of the office bearers for the 2009-2013 term.
Kalmadi, was re-elected unopposed for the third consecutive term. He was first elected in 2000 at Jakarta, since then he has introduced many development projects in the Asian
Athletics circuit, including Asian All Star meet, Asian Indoor Championship and Asian Grand Prix series. Maurice Nicholas was nominated and elected as Secretary/Treasurer of Asian Athletics Association.

The meeting was attended by Diack, apart from the representatives of 45 countries.
Diack appreciated the efforts of Asia by organising global events, particularly appreciated India’s efforts of organising World Half Marathon at New Delhi in 2004 in a splendid
manner and other competitions in Asia.

He referred to his commitment to make school athletics more popular and offered his full support to Asia in its endeavour to promote athletics in Asia.
