Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan have virtually invaded the prisons of West Bengal.

The excitement surrounding the ongoing World Cup 2015 has reached prisons of West Bengal and the prison authorities have given their nod to cricket-mad inmates’ requests to be allowed to watch the matches live on television sets.

While the inmates gave a miss to the most talked about Indo-Pakistan match held on Sunday, the jail authorities have made arrangements for the inmates of Alipore, Presidency and Dum Dum Correctional Homes to view upcoming matches live.

As soon as the tournament began, the inmates of these three Correctional Homes contacted the superintendent and requested him to allow them to catch a glimpse of the World Cup.

While TV sets have been installed in Correctional Homes since many years, but the official broadcaster of the World Cup – Star Sports is not a part of the channel bouquet on offer inside the jails.

“We are going to subscribe to channel bouquet containing Star Sports and allow them to watch the matches. The extra charge for the subscription will be paid from the West Bengal Prisoners Welfare Fund. Inmates raise funds through dance, play and other activities and we are going to utilise this money to subscribe to channel,” Adhir Sharma, Additional Director General, West Bengal Correctional Homes told dna.

While a city-based NGO has come forward to donate three television sets to the Presidency jail and pay for the subscription charges, the jail authorities will take care of other expenses incurred during the World Cup at Dum Dum and Alipore jail through the welfare fund. The cable connections will be withdrawn after the World Cup tournament comes to an end.

Meanwhile, the jail authorities have been directed to deploy additional security personnel during telecasts and intensify vigil during the match broadcast.

“We have made all necessary arrangements without compromising on security and the superintendents of the respective correctional homes have been instructed to ensure that peace is maintained inside the jails,” added Sharma.
