Men's cricket team

The cricket-crazy nation had yet another memorable season this year. Although India were edged out by West Indies in the semifinals of the World T20 at home, they barely had disappointing outcomes thereafter. Test series wins over the West Indies, New Zealand and England saw them reclaim their No. 1 Test status.

Men's junior hockey team

The U-21 players scripted history by becoming the first host nation ever to win the Junior World Cup title after they clinched the coveted trophy in Lucknow. The colts upset the likes of Australia and Belgium en route the title, which came home after a long wait of 15 years.

Men's kabaddi team

Having never lost a global event in the history of the sport, they were the firm favourites to win a record seventh World Cup title. Living up to their reputation, they did just that at this year's mega event in Ahmedabad. After being stunned by South Korea in the tournament opener, the hosts won all their matches to retain the crown.

Men's senior hockey team

The year 2016 was, arguably, the best of all in recent times. The highlight of the senior team's season was winning its first ever silver medal at the prestigious Champions Trophy in London. They also won gold medals at the Asian Champions Trophy, South Asian Games and silver at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. They might have finished a below-par eighth at the Olympics but the team showed immense promise for the future.

Men's basketball team

Indian basketball has certainly had an upward graph this year. The cagers upset the likes of China, Philippines and Kazakhstan on their way to the quarterfinals of the prestigious FIBA Asia Challenge, before going down to eventual winners Iran. They also finished a credible third at the just-concluded Sheung Cup by defeating hosts Hong Kong in the bronze medal playoff.
