'Traumatised' chief rifle coach quits

The matter is currently with the NRAI's Athletes Commission headed by Arjuna awardee Moraad Ali Khan. To avoid conflict of interest, Bhagwat and Shirur, who are part of the commission, have been asked by the NRAI to recuse themselves from the proceedings.

Stanislav Lapidus has resigned as India's chief rifle coach just six months before the Rio Olympics. The 63-year-old Kazakh, who had been training the Indian shooters since his appointment in 2009, met National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh here on Thursday and tendered his resignation.

Six women shooters including Olympians Anjali Bhagwat and Suma Shirur had levelled serious allegations of seeking sexual favours from junior shooters against Lapidus last year. The shooters had also described him extremely rude and arrogant while talking to the senior shooters.

The matter is currently with the NRAI's Athletes Commission headed by Arjuna awardee Moraad Ali Khan. To avoid conflict of interest, Bhagwat and Shirur, who are part of the commission, have been asked by the NRAI to recuse themselves from the proceedings.

Lapidus, in his meeting with the NRAI chief, told him the whole incident has left him "deeply hurt and traumatised" and that he wouldn't be able to do justice to his position in such "disturbing environment". Lapidus had offered to resign before the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, which concluded recently in the capital, but Singh managed to convince him to stay on.

However, dna has reliably learnt that Lapidus will continue as private coach to four Indian shooters, assisting them in their preparation for the Rio Games.

"He was unable to bear the mental trauma, which his family has gone through since these allegations first surfaced in last August. He said some shooters unnecessarily created the circumstances for him to leave. It's his personal decision and we can't stop him. We will be forwarding his resignation to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and, thereafter, his one-month notice period will start as per his contract. However, the probe will continue into this matter to ascertain who was actually guilty," Singh told dna.

Singh said the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Bangkok from March 1 to 9 will be his last assignment with the Indian team.

"Our team for the World Cup will be selected on Friday. He will continue to work with the team until the end of the World Cup. I am deeply disappointed with the turn of events that a renowned coach like him is leaving us midway in our preparation for the Rio Games," he added.
