Sharapova came back to business serving a 15-month doping ban at the Stuttgart Grand Prix last week. It is certain that if she needs to hit the clay in Paris from May 22, she must get a wild card entry. But her participation in the Wimbledon still lies in her own hands. Winning the championship at Madrid and Rome or even progressing to the semis can push her up the rankings, which will enable her to at least break through to the top 200. Breaking into the top 200 by May 29, will enable her to gain entry by qualification. Much better if she can get into the top 100 by May 22, then she will be eligible for the main draw.

But if she takes her time to get back to her best, then the All England Club, sub-committee chaired by Tim Henman will decide on June 20, whether to grant her a wild card entry.

Chairman Philip Brook said to Mirror: “We have a longstanding and tried and tested process. That process is that in the week before qualifying we have a meeting of our tennis sub-commitee to discuss all applications and this year is no different. We will wait to see if Maria applies for a wildcard and if so, we will consider her case alongside everyone else's. Does the club have a policy on convicted doping offenders? No. It is done on a case-by-case basis.”

But men's world number one Andy Murray expects her to be at Wimbledon in July. The French Tennis Federation will announce their decision on May 16.

Murray, however, said he expected the five-times grand slam champion would be on the grasscourts of south-west London. "I think there's a good chance Wimbledon would give her one (a wild card) to get into qualifying," Murray told reporters at an event for June's Aegon Championships tournament at the Queen's Club in London.

"I think we've got to wait and see what happens because there might not even be a decision to be made because she might be in the main draw after Madrid or Rome, so there's a good chance she can get in by right." The Russian can qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon by reaching the semi-final of either the Madrid or Rome tournaments.

The rankings deadline for Wimbledon qualification is May 29. Murray, who sustained an injury in March, returned to action at the Barcelona Open last month and said he was feeling good as he looked ahead to Roland Garros. "I feel much better than I did three or four weeks ago," he added. "I feel like physically I am getting back to where I need to be and I feel like I am able to put in the work I need to, to be able to play my best tennis."
