Senegalese midfielder Sadio Mane scored the only late goal of the game that helped Southampton move up to the third place in the Premier League table as they manager-less Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

It was QPR's fifth straight defeat and they remain in the bottom three now, after their boss Harry Redknapp resigned on Tuesday. They were led by academy coach Chris Ramsey.

The only goal of the game came from Mane, who turned Nedum Onuoha to fire into the top corner to provide the winner for Southampton, the BBC reported.

Jose Fonte hit the bar in the first half for Southampton, whose left-back Matt Targett was taken to hospital with a head injury.

The England Under-20 defender, in the starting line-up because Ryan Bertrand was suspended, needed seven minutes of treatment on the pitch after being left motionless following an aerial collision with QPR winger Matty Phillips.

Manager Ronald Koeman, though, later confirmed that Targett had suffered no serious damage.

Southampton recorded their fifth successive away victory, against a QPR side that created few clear chances, although substitute Mauro Zarate had a goal disallowed after Mane scored.

Koeman said on Targett's head injury that everything is now under control, adding that he would have a headache but nothing more, which is good news.

Regarding his side's performance, Koeman said that he believes they played well, adding that they played good football and had the best chances in the game.

QPR caretaker-manager Ramsey said that he honestly felt that his side rode their luck a bit in the first half, but added that the defeat was very difficult to take.
