India’s story at Rio 2016 has been headlined by the ladies. First Dipa Karmakar, showed an entire nation that nothing was impossible when she came mighty close to winning a medal at gymnastics. Then Sakshi Malik won a bronze in wrestling before PV Sindhu won a silver against the Carolina Marin. While we haven’t been able to stop talking about these two since they held up the national flag, there was an adorable moment when the two bumped into teach other.

Sakshi Malik shared on Twitter with the caption: “Ran into the super awesome @Pvsindhu1 and the Legend P Gopichand! True Champions!”

P V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik did not just win medals at Rio Olympics and won hearts of millions of Indians, the two of them are also trending on internet and has made up to the list of most searched Indian athletes on Google. The recent release also showed that Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Sikkim showed the most search interest in the Olympics. According to Google Trends-Olympics curated on August 18, seven out of ten of the most searched athletes in India in the last three days were women. Top Searched Indian athletes in the last three days included P. V. Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Srikanth Kidambi, Dipa Karmakar, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Vinesh Phogat, Lalita Babar, Vikas Krishan Yadav, and Narsingh Pancham Yadav.

On August 8, Deepa Karmakar was the most searched athlete on Google as she created history moving into the final of one of the most difficult Gymnastic Vault. Google searches last week peaked the highest during her battle in the finals on 13th August as fans continued to cheer. Along with their favourite athletes, people also kept a close watch on their opponents. Lin Dan, the Chinese Badminton player who defeated Srikanth Kadambi, Nozomi Okuhara from Japan and Wang Yihan from China who lost to P V Sindhu in their respective battles also made it to the top five searches.

Overall, badminton and wrestling remained the top searched sports by Indians. The country is currently ranked 11th in the global trends in terms of searches for the ‘Olympics’ over the last seven days. Indian fans also showed a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm for Jamaican sprinter and the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, who remained the most searched foreign athlete on Google India. Michael Phelps, the swimming sensation from USA, also attracted a lot of search interest among Indian fans.
