On a day when young Shubhankar Sharma climbed atop the leaderboard, Gaganjeet Bhullar failed to make the cut at the halfway stage of the PGTI Ahmedabad Masters here on Wednesday.

Sharma scored a splendid seven-under 65 in round two to take his tally to 10-under 134 and lead by one shot over his closest rivals Chikkarangappa S and Rahul Bajaj, both of whom ended the day with nine-under 135.

Fifty professionals and one amateur made the cut, which was kept at four-over 148.

Shubhankar Sharma (69, 65), who was tied seventh overnight, picked up his first shot of the day with a good up and down from the bunker on the 12th. However, he found the water hazard on the next hole and, therefore, dropped a shot. The 18-year-old got back into rhythm with a 20-feet eagle conversion on the 14th and a 10-feet birdie putt on the 16th.

Had Rahil Gangjee not scored two bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine, it would have been a memorable day for him. Considered one of the tournament favourites, Gangjee's bogey on the 13th and 18th holes, besides a double on 16th, saw him three-under in the second round.

"It was an average day for me. Even though I had nine birdies, multiple mistakes towards the end cost me dearly," said Gangjee, who climbed 28 places in the standings. He was tied 14th at two-under 142 with city mate SSP Chowrasia.

Another favourite, Bhullar, who won European Challenge Tour event at Kensville in 2011, failed to make the cut.

"That is the uncertainty of this sport," said Kolkata-based Gangjee, while referring to Bhullar, the golfer from Kapurthala who finished with five-over 149.

The joint leaders from round one Rashid Khan of Delhi and Lucknow's Sanjeev Kumar slipped to tied fifth after submitting identical scores of 71 in the second round. The duo shared fifth position with Gurgaon-based Arshdeep Tiwana at six-under 138.
