Wayne Rooney inched a step closer to Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time goalscoring record as he opened the scoring in the sixth minute for England to guide them to a routine Euro 2016 win against Lithuania at Wembley on Friday.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane, who has 29 goals for his club this season, scored 79 seconds into his England debut as he came off the bench after 70 minutes with Rooney's team already on the way to a fifth win from five qualifiers.

Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling had already given England a comfortable 3-0 lead over Lithuania, setting the stage for young Kane as the forward scored with his third touch heading in Sterling's cross at the far post, the BBC reported.

Rooney got the night off to the perfect start when he headed his 47th goal for England after only six minutes, leaving him just two adrift of Charlton's tally ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Italy in Turin.

England's captain also hit the woodwork twice before man of the match Welbeck headed a deflected second just before half-time.

Sterling was rewarded for a lively performance with his first England goal, but it was Kane who stole the show with a predator's effort as part of a confident cameo, the report added.
