A report in Hindustan Times suggests that a delegation of ministers from Haryana led by states Sports Minister Anil Vij didn’t go to watch any event on Monday and missed the quarterfinal bout of pugilist Vikas Krishan, a DSP in the Haryana police. The same report claims that the delegation missed discus thrower Seema Poonia and Greco-Roman wrestler Ravinder Khatri’s events as well. Reportedly, on Tuesday the delegation instead spent time in their beach hotel and explored the city.

Reacting to the reports, Anil Vij wrote on Facebook (sic):

Journalist Friends, that is right wrongly or rightly I accepted the decision of my Govt. and supported by entire opposition in an all party meet upalso taking a decision for postponement of Assembly session from 19th to 26th of August to enable the delegation visit the Rio despite being sick and undergoing treatment from PGI Chandigarh. and facing criticism from the last some days. We have a free press anybody can write as he wish, but today some media wrote that instead watching the matched I enjoyed at the beach for which I have never been to. Before writing at least, I should have been asked, if not enquired from any fellow Journalist of my reason he would told if I can go to a beach or not.

That is right we could not attend yesterday matches because despite our best efforts we could not get yesterday tickets though we have tickets of all other Indian events moreover yesterday Boxer Manoj and his brother came to my room they had some issues. They were worried by some Gunda elements disturbing their parents at home for which I have taken care of before coming to Rio with the help of administration.

He was also disturb by Boxing Federation Banned in India for the last 4 years. He attributed his defeat due to this, because there was nobody to support him. I had to spend some time to listen to his grievances. As regard the word Junket used by many " Junket to khane peene vaalon ke liye hota hai, hum to daal roti khane vaale hain aur yhaan to vo bhi sounds se bhi nhi mil rhi " As far going in Business Class is concerned it as per entitlements. Department has booked as per entitlements some in economy and some in Business and this as per many other delegations gone to abroad in this Govt. and previous Govt. I have never objected to media writing anything in my life. This only to clarify certain things. I am open to your questions for my post-mortem.

Earlier he hit back at the opposition, saying those criticising his visit were having ‘defective thinking.’ People who are criticising my Rio trip have defective thinking. They have started a hate campaign against our country. On every occasion, they want to criticise and not support the athletes,’ Vij told ANI here. Announcing a cash reward of Rs. six crores for the gold medal-winning athletes, Vij said, ‘We have come here to stand by our players who are fighting for India and see what problems they are facing and how we can further improve their performance. We are doing a lot for our Haryana players. This year we've given Rs. 100 crores as prize money to the players. We want to stand by our players in every stage.’

The Congress Party had earlier said the Haryana Sport Minister’s visit to Brazil to attend the 2016 Rio Olympics post the controversy surrounding Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel will add ‘insult to injury’. Vij's nine-member delegation includes his private secretary, two BJP MLAs, a media adviser to the chief minister, the additional chief secretary (sports), K.K. Khandelwal, his private secretary, and the joint director for sports, OP Sharma.
