No takers for BCCI's short-term vacancies

Had it been a normal scenario, many BCCI office-bearers would have, by now, engaged themselves in excessive backroom lobbying and politicking to fill the vacant positions of secretary and treasurer. Ever since BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke quit the posts, there has been plenty of guesswork about the new BCCI order even if it is for four months.

While the names of Anil Kumble and Ranjib Biswal are being floated around to replace Jagdale, it is learnt that they are not quite the frontrunners for the post. dna understands that Biswal is “not keen” on holding the position only for four months. Also, he could contest the Lok Sabha elections next year, and isn’t quite gung-ho about the job.

Biswal doesn’t have very warm memories of the man at the helm, Jagmohan Dalmiya. Two years back, Dalmiya and certain section from the East Zone, Jharkhand’s Amitabh Chaudhury included, had opposed Biswal’s candidature for the post of secretary. Those close to Biswal also claim that Dalmiya had never backed Biswal, the cricketer.

Kumble’s position is more untenable because of his multifarious profile. He runs a player-management company (Tenvic) which had signed up cricketers. Also, he is the chief mentor of Mumbai Indians. The Champions League T20 will be held in September as MI, being IPL champions, have gained automatic entry into the event. If Kumble were to take up the responsibility, how would he discharge dual roles? Another case of conflict of interest.

Cricket Association of Bengal treasurer Biswarup Dey is also being thought of as a serious candidate for the secretary’s position. Appointing a president and a secretary from the same zone is unprecedented, though stranger things have happened in the BCCI.

Interestingly, Baroda Cricket Association’s Sanjay Patel could be rewarded with at least one plum post. For the uninitiated, Patel runs a chartered accountancy firm and was Team India’s manager at the 2012 World Twenty20. Patel, strangely, doesn’t seem to enjoy the goodwill of his BCCI peers (the reason could not be established). That said, there is very little chance of him getting the job on a long-term basis.
