The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent out a strong signal to the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Deccan Chargers. It is now reliably learnt that Hyderabad may lose the team if Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd do not set their house in order.

The BCCI’s working committee, which met in Chennai on Wednesday, is believed to have been informed that the board would not hesitate to cancel the team and go for an auction if the Chargers failed to come clean on their accounts.

As was recently reported by this paper, the Chargers have been given time till the end of this month to clear their financial mess and release the payments to their players.

The IPL’s governing council members have held discussions with the banks to which the DCHL is indebted. The GC officials are believed to have made it clear that the team cannot be mortgaged. If the Chargers do not come clean with their finances, the BCCI might opt for an auction by terminating their contract.

Meanwhile, there was a discussion on an advertisement that runs a campaign against adulterated food. Apparently, a senior India player has objected that he wasn’t informed about the exact content of the ad.

However, the BCCI’s working committee felt that the player had no right to object after having shot the commercial himself. The board, meanwhile, has held a discussion with the company and it was decided that the commercial will be changed.

In another decision, the BCCI has restored the one-time benefit to four players who didn’t feature in the original list. Dilip Vengsarkar, GR Viswanath, Mohinder Amarnath and Syed Kirmani, who were not part of the scheme that was announced during the inauguration of the IPL 5, have been given the benefit. It was also decided to extend the benefit to cricketers who retired after 2003-04, but were eligible for the scheme at the end of that particular season.

There was also a proposal to extend the pension scheme to all first class and international cricketers by removing the cut-off date. The players will get their money as per the number of matches played.

There was a discussion on the next president too. The exact details were not available, though it is likely that a candidate from North could be fielded by East.
