Rizvi College batsman Rudra Dhanday had left his house on Thursday morning with the hope of giving 100 per cent on the field. Making it to the history books was a thought that hadn't crossed his mind.
However, the 19-year-old became the first player to slam a double ton in an official Twenty20 game, overcoming Chris Gayle's 175 for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2013 IPL.
There is no record available of a player scoring a double hundred in an official T20 tournament.
Turning out for Rizvi College in the Abis Rizvi Champions Trophy Super-8 College T20 Tournament tie, organised by University of Mumbai under the aegis of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), the youngster slammed 200 not out in just 67 balls against P Dalmia College at the Matunga Gymkhana.
Delhi's Mohit Ahlawat shook the cricket world earlier this year with his 300-run knock in a T20 game but the feat is unrecognised as it was not an official tournament.
Dhanday's scored the double ton in a tournament recognised by the MCA and hence, is significant.
Opting to bat first, Rizvi opener Dhanday went after the hapless attack on a true batting track. The youngster reached the three-figure mark in just 39 balls and went to score double ton in 67 balls, propelling his team to a mammoth 322 for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs.
Dhanday's knock was punctuated by 21 fours and 15 sixes.
Dalmia College, in reply, were all out for 75 in 10.2 overs, giving Rizvi College a 247-run win.
"I am speechless. I can't believe I did something like this," said an excited Dhanday. "It's a perfect gift for my mom and dad who have their marriage anniversary tomorrow."
Dhanday, who is also a Mumbai U-19 cricketer, has five centuries against his name in T20 matches.
Dhanday began playing cricket coached by his father, who works in customs.
"I spoke to my dad and he is very happy with my effort. He asked me to carry on the good work as the Mumbai selection trials are around the corner.
So what did he have for breakfast?
"Nothing, but a glass of milk as I had no time for breakfast," Dhanday, who idolises Virender Sehwag, said.
