The spotlight is back on Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of former BCCI president N Srinivasan and Rajasthan Royal's co-owner Raj Kundra, both of whom have been found guilty of involvement in betting during 2013 IPL matches. The Supreme Court appointed judicial panel headed by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) R M Lodha has asked them to explain why they should not be punished for the offence.

A source told dna, "The panel, in its meeting which was held on February 22 here, has issued show-cause notice to Meiyappan and Kundra. They were asked to respond by March 11 and 12, 2015."

"Both of them can place their arguments before the commission through their counsel," the source added.

In January, a Supreme Court bench had accepted the findings of Justice Mukul Mudgal panel, which had conducted preliminary inquiry, against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team official Meiyappan, and Rajasthan Royal's (RR) Kundra, husband of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, for their involvement in betting.

It also set up three-member committee headed by Justice Lodha to decide the sentence for the duo within six months.

Justice Lodha committee, comprising (retired) justices Ashok Bhan and RV Ravindran, was also asked to decide the fate of their franchises — CSK and RR.

The Apex Court had observed, "It has no reason to differ with the findings of the court-appointed committee that Meiyappan and Kundra were team officials indulging in betting."

While deciding Cricket Association of Bihar's (CAB) petition against Srinivasan, the owner of CSK who was ousted from the post of BCCI President by the court in May last year for his "conflict of interest" and alleged role to save his son-in-law Meiyappan in the betting and spot fixing scandal, the court had restrained him from contesting the election again.

Seeking a report from the panel, the bench had asked Justice Lodha committee to hear Meiyappan and Kundra before taking a decision on punishment.

In addition, the committee was directed to probe the role of BCCI's Chief operating officer Sunder Raman and if found guilty will award the punishment.

Further the panel was directed to make recommendations for bringing out reforms in the BCCI for better functioning of the country's highest cricket body.

Meiyappan was arrested on May 25, 2013 by Mumbai police for allegedly taking part in illegal betting on the IPL-6 .Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh, who was also arrested for allegedly serving as a middleman between Meiyappan and bookies. In June 2013, they were granted bail by a court.
