Kunj advances in AITA talent series tennis

Second seeded Kunj Kotak of Baroda faced little resistance from Ahmedabad lad Ayush Thakkar as he beat him 7-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the boys' under-12, at Astral Polytechnic Gujarat state ranking tennis championships, which are being played along with the AITA Talent Series tournament, at the SRAG courts here on Sunday.

Joining Kunj, who studies in Rosary High School, in the boys' U-12 last eight were Himansh Mehta who beat Rohan Nair 7-1, Rahul Kapadia a 7-2 winer over Sauabhya Mehta, Upamanyu Sinha who downed Hainil Modi 7-2, Devansh Patel who ousted Dhyan Patel 7-4, Rutul Patel who saw off Parth Patel 7-3 and Pavitsingh Tuteja a 7-1 winner over Rahi Shah. In the only match here that went the full distance, Raag Shah defeated Madhav Singhal in the tie-breaker 7-6 (8-6).

Meanwhile, the eight qualifiers for the main draw of the AITA Talent Series were decided on Sunday. Suni Choudhary posted the most comfortable win in this section, 8-0 over Baroda's Neelkanth Solanki. Two Mumbai players, Kaushal Mehta and Nikunj Mehta also made it, with 8-2 and 8-3 victories over Bikoy

Patel and Siddharth Nair. Others who made the grade were Vidit Vaghela (8-1 over Rishabh Boradia) and Devanshu Jain who beat Salil Rai 8-3. Dishit Nathwani knocked out Parth  8-3, Ronak Sanadia qualified by beating  Parth N Shah 8-5 and  Patan's Jay Soni accounted for Aman Agrawal 8-2.

In Gujarat state men's singles first round action, past champion Parth Indrodia blanked Nikhil Gangrani 7-0 and Shubham Patel recorded an identical score against Dhawal Kodekar. In the toughest men's match,  Jay Soni prevailed over Lal Bahdhur 7-6 (10-8). In other men's matches, Anmol Mehta and Raveendra Singh beat their rivals, Maulik Thakkar and Arun Sharma by the same 7-3 margins. Suresh Maurya accounted for Rishabh Boradia 7-2 and Kaushal Mehta beat Malav Shah 7-0.
