After Alastair Cook called it quits on the captaincy for the English side, James Anderson has backed current vice-captain of the Test team to take charge.

According to a report in BBC Sports, Anderson said, "Root is fairly quiet but he has got that fire in his belly. He's a really impressive young man."

Root was Cook's right-hand man since May 2015. He made is Test debut in 2012 and has scored 4,594 runs since. When it comes to all three formats of the game, Root is breathing down Virat Kohli's neck with total of 8,469 runs to Indian skipper's 8,536 runs.

Seasoned bowler himself, Anderson thinks Root is the obvious choice.

"Root gets into situations, one-on-ones, with people. He speaks a lot of sense when he does speak and he's a really impressive young man. He's the obvious candidate. The decision is a big one because he's our best player, so you obviously don't want that to be affected," said Anderson.

Root scored 1,477 Test runs in 2016. This includes centuries against South Africa, Pakistan, and India.
