England pace bowler James Anderson has equalled Kapil Dev's record of 434 Test wickets in the first Test match against Sri Lanka on Friday.

Having put into bat first, England managed a first innings score of 298, as Jonny Bairstow high scored with 140 runs.

James Anderson got the wicket of Kushal Silva to equal Kapil Dev's record. Kapil Dev had taken 434 wickets in 131 Test matches for India whereas Anderson equalled his record in just 114 matches for England.

Anderson is now the sixth highest wicket-taker in Test matches. Muttiah Muralitharan, with 800 Test scalps, hold the record for most number of wickets. The list is followed by Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, Glenn Mcgrath and Courtney Walsh.

Kapil Dev had talked about how he was a big fan of Anderson. While speaking to Mid-Day, he said: "I am very happy that he will become the No 1 England bowler soon. He is a compelte package. He has everything: speed, a smooth run-up, and every other quality. He uses the crease very nicely. He can give the ball a lift. He swings the ball both ways. He has an effective bouncer, superb slower ones. What more could one ask for?"
