World No. 156 Aljaz Bedene reached his first ATP World Tour final in a dramatic fashion on Saturday by saving four match points to defeat third seed Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6 6-3 7-6(8) at the Chennai Open on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Slovenian is the first qualifier to reach the final of this ATP World Tour 250 hard court tournament. He will face defending champion Stan Wawrinka in the final on Sunday. The swiss beat David Goffin 7-5 6-3.

Having fallen at the semifinal stage in 2013 (to Tipsarevic), Bedene has gone one step further in 2015 after beating three Spanish players in succession. His first major win the tournament was when he upset second seed Feliciano Lopez in the second round. He then went further to oust fifth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the quarterfinal.

Bautista Agut had the match on his racquet four times as he failed in his bid to reach a second Chennai final, having finished runner-up in 2013. The 26 year old had two chances to close it out when Bedene trailed 15/40 on serve at 4-5 in the third set. In the ensuing tie-break, he led 6-5 and 7-6, but could not convert as Bedene fought back to prevail in two hours and 43 minutes.
