IPL 2017 auction: Here's how the bidding game works

The 2017 IPL player auction will be held on Monday in Bengaluru. The eight franchises will go into the auction and a sum total of Rs 143.33 Cr can be spent by them altogether for 2017 season.

The teams can have a maximum of 27 players including 9 overseas players. Out of 352 players who will go under the hammer, a maximum of 76 players, including 28 foreigners, will be bought at the auction.

The auction which will be hosted by Richard Madley and will work in the following way:

1. The 352 players will be sorted into groups based on their role and then split into pots.

2. The auctioneer will announce the player’s name and teams will start bidding for the cricketer starting from the base price.

3. The team members will have to raise their team paddle to make a bid. The team with the highest bid will get the player.

4. The bidding will continue till all the other teams back out and the auctioneer announces that the player is sold.

5. A player will go unsold if none of the teams place a bid.

6. The unsold players will come back into the pool after all the players go under the hammer for the first time.

7. The auctioneer will give the franchises an option of listing the unsold players they are interested in, and will start the bidding for those players for a second time with the base price of the player slashed to half of the original price.

8. The players who are not bought by the franchises for the second time will remain unsold in the auction.
