Wondering what the long, animated chat between Ravichandran Ashwin and James Anderson on Day 5 of the fourth Test at Wankhede was all about?

Ashwin, who was handed over the Test vice-captaincy's role in the absence of the injured Ajinkya Rahane, welcomed England's last man Anderson in an unusual way to the crease after the fall of ninth wicket (Adil Rashid).

The 'words' that he spelt out for his guest were actually not pleasant to Anderson's ears. The off-spinner was actually getting back at the England seamer after he took a jibe on Sunday about Virat Kohli's top form in the series including a career-best 235 here.

Asked about the exchanges, the India captain who has a history of animated discussions with his counterparts said he was trying to douse the fire.

"For the first time, I was trying to calm things down in the middle at a time when James Anderson is involved. Ashwin wasn't pleased with what he said in the press, and I didn't even know about it. He told me on the ground. So, I didn't know what to make of it. I was laughing about it. Ashwin wasn't too impressed and he let him know, not using any bad words honestly. I think he told me he was pretty disappointed with what he said and it is important to accept defeat as it is," Kohli said at the post-match press conference.

"You know how Ashwin is, he is to the point, can really strike you well and he doesn't need to say bad words. Later on, I told James these things happen and let's move on," added Kohli.

England captain Alastair Cook was obviously disappointed. "It was a bit of a sour end really. A disappointing end in terms of how well the spirit between both sides has been. It was clearly a reference to what Jimmy said yesterday (Saturday) that has been blown out of all proportions which it can do here. He was just stating a fact which if you asked Virat is probably quite true," Cook said.

Ashwin may face punishment from International Cricket Council for his act on Monday, but he wouldn't mind it for his skipper.

For the record, the England pacer Anderson said on the penultimate day of the Test about Kohli: "I'm not sure he's changed. I just think any technical deficiencies he's got aren't in play out here. The wickets just take that out of the equation," Anderson had said after he was asked if Kohli was tested enough in home conditions.

"We had success against him in England, but the pace of the pitches over here just take any flaws he has out of the equation. There's not that pace in the wicket to get the nicks, like we did against him in England with a bit more movement. Pitches like this suit him down to the ground."
