For former South Africa spinner Nicky Boje, the purpose of participating in the full marathon was achieved: enjoy the experience of running in Mumbai.

"It was really good," Boje told dna after crossing the finish line on Sunday. "It was quite enjoyable. Just to go over that bridge (Bandra-Worli Sea Link) with the sun coming up. It was just unbelievable." Despite clocking 05:34.13 – a far cry from his 04:40.00 achieved in the 2013 Berlin Marathon – Boje was more than happy to complete the 42 km along with his wife, Anel.

"We didn't go really for a massive time here. We just wanted to enjoy the race. The weather was great, so can't complain. It was really special to run with my wife here," Boje said. The 42-year-old has history attached with Mumbai. It was here at the Wankhede Stadium that he made his Test debut for South Africa against India back in February 2000. Ask him which of the two Mumbai debuts was more satisfying, pat came the reply: "Both were fantastic, really," Boje said with a chuckle.

With the Mumbai Marathon under his belt, the man from Bloemfontein now wants to run marathons in all the seven continents. "We'll see how it goes. I'm actually trying to see how many marathons I can run all over the world. I want to try and run in all the seven continents, and see how close it can get. This is No. 2!" Boje said.

Boje, who played 115 ODIs and 43 Tests for the Proteas, said running marathons for him was a way to keep himself fit.
"It's just about staying fit. I want to keep working hard. I keep running in South Africa. As and when I get the opportunity to run marathons, I take it," Boje said as he clutched a bottle of water.
