Northern Irish golf ace Rory McIlroy has claimed that he is pretty disappointed with how he played in the WGC-Cadillac Championship and admitted that he has work to do to get his game in shape before he attempts at complete a career Grand Slam at the Masters in April.

McIlroy finished eight shots behind Dustin Johnson in the WGC-Cadillac Championship and has been left disappointed with his performance. His frustrating week included him tossing a three-iron into a lake.

McIlroy admitted that the game is just not quite there, insisting that he has got a week off now to try and work on it a little bit, the BBC reported.

The world number one golfer said that he is pretty disappointed with how he played overall, adding that he felt it was a little better again on Sunday for the most part but a bit of a disappointing finish. But, he said that it's just not quite 100 percent.

In the tournament before the WGC event, the Northern Irishman missed the cut at the Honda Classic.

McIlroy was reunited with the club he threw into the lake ahead of Sunday's final round at Doral, Miami, after it was retrieved by a diver and presented to the golfer on the range by Doral's owner Donald Trump.

McIlroy's closing round reportedly came to a comical end when he hit two balls into the water on the last, faked throwing another club in after them and then chipped in from the back of the green for a double-bogey six. It added up to a closing 72 and a one-under-par total of 287, which was still good enough for a share of ninth place.

Afterwards McIlroy, who had been in good form in the lead-up to missing the cut at the Honda Classic, said some fear had crept into his game. He said that he is tentative, a little bit scared to play certain shots, because he feels like he can't at the minute.

So, the Northern Irishman said that hitting away from flags, trying to make sure that he is missing it in the right areas, adding that he is just playing quite conservatively, which is very much unlike him. He claimed that he has just got to get back at it and try to figure out what he needs to do.
