Delhi government felicitates Asian Games, Para Asian Games, medal winners

Chief Secretary, DM Spolia, honoured 17 sports persons with a shawl, citation and a cheque.

The Delhi government on Tuesday felicitated sportspersons, who won medals at the Asian Games and Para Asian Games, held recently at Incheon in South Korea.

Chief Secretary, DM Spolia, honoured 17 sportspersons with a shawl, citation and a cheque, for a monetary reward, in appreciation of their excellence at the Games.

Spolia felicitated Abhishek Verma (Archery) with prize money of Rs 34 lakh, while Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestling), who won a gold medal, was honoured with prize money of 20 lakh.

"It's a matter of great pride that these sportspersons have brought laurels under the excellent guidance and supervision of coaches and infrastructure provided under the sports programme of Delhi government," said Spolia.

The Delhi government is committed to promoting sports in the educational institutions and upgrading facilities for the same at schools, educational institutions.

Among those felicitated were Rakesh Kumar, Manjeet Chhillar, Anup Kumar, Navneet Gautam (all Kabaddi), Yuki Bhambri and Divij Sharan (both Tennis), Bajrang (Wrestling) and Sandeep Sejwal (Swimming).

The list also includes Bajrang Lal Takhar (Rowing), Samresh Jung, Shreyasi Singh (both Shooting), Sharad Kumar, Ram Karan Singh, Ankur Dhama (all Para Athletics), and Narender Grewal (Wushu).

The 2014 Asian Games were held from September 19 to October 4. The Para Asian Games was a parallel sports event for Asian athletes with disability that was held in Incheon between October 18 and October 24.

India won 33 medals at the Para Asian Games while its tally in the Asian Games was 57.
