When Supreme Court on January 20 came out with clarification regarding tenure clause for administrators, making it nine years plus nine years separately for BCCI and state associations, a handful of officials immediately started claiming their eligibility to continue in cash rich body for few more days.

The first one to do so was proclaimed “proxy king” of Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA), CK Khanna. Also, Jharkhand’s strongman Amitabh Chaudhary, joint secretary, and Haryana’s first cricket family’s member Anirudh Chaudhary, treasurer, didn’t waste time in claiming their stake.

Khanna’s celebrations lasted only few hours as he was told by a senior lawyer that “he needs to first submit affidavit of compliance in regard to SC orders” before making any such claim.

Secondly, all the ‘so called’ eligible officials need to resign from their respective state associations as per the guidelines of the Justice Lodha panel, because the office-bearers are not allowed to hold posts in the BCCI and the state units at the same time. And lastly, they in no way have any power to enjoy as SC has categorically said in its Jan. 2 orders that till “administrators are in place it would be CEO Rahul Johri who will run day-to-day affairs of BCCI”.

And not to forget that “mandatory cooling off period of three years” is something that they all have to undergo before becoming eligible to contest further elections.

Khanna is said to have desperately tried to get in touch with N Srinivasan’s camp loyalists (read both Chaudharys), for whom he fought for vice-president’s post from Central Zone in the last elections.

Khanna immediately dropped his original gameplan of taking morning flight to Mumbai in his desperate effort to go and pursue BCCI’s CEO to handover charge.

“I would wait till Tuesday’s Court orders before charting the future course,” Khanna said.

The opportunist

Khanna is a tailor-turned cricket administrator who has mastered the art of controlling proxies to gain control over DDCA.

Former chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court, Justice Mukul Mudgal, in a scathing report submitted to Delhi HC, termed Khanna as a “pernicious influence”.

Khanna is famous in cricketing circles as someone who loves to get his picture clicked on all the man of the match presentations being held at Ferozeshah Kotla ground.

However, according to an insider, he has always ensured that “his signatures are found no where in cheques issued by DDCA for various purposes”.

That’s the reason even Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) failed to find any clue against him despite indicting DDCA on 62 counts few years back.

His most famous move was seen during the last BCCI elections, when he suddenly filed his nomination papers from Central Zone to defeat former Union minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia. By doing so, he became the first official in the history of BCCI to virtually control two zones in a single term.
