Despite not qualifying for Q2, McLaren supported their driver Jenson Button insisting that Renault's Kevin Magnussen transgressed for crossing the track limits twice, instead of once.

McLaren, being so convinced of the transgression, even called Button back to the car but the Q2 spot stayed with Magnussen as the stewards were unable to review the footage before Q2 started. According to SkySports, McLaren manager Éric Boullier said, "We believed he was off the line and should have had his time deleted."

However, Button revealed that all the drivers had a meeting on Thursday before the race in which it was decided that if all four tyres were on the Silverstone while lines of the three corners - Copse, Stowe and the last corner - then the lap was over. He said, "They were the places where we thought we would gain time."

Things went worse for McLaren as Fernando Alonso got relegated to tenth when his time of Q3 got cut down due to track transgression.
