Some called him Old Fox for his shrewdness; some others paid tribute to his financial acumen by giving him the sobriquet 'Dollarmiya'. But for those who knew him up, close and personal, Jagmohan Dalmiya was just 'Jaggu da', an affable man who lived and breathed cricket.

That he will be remembered as one of the most recognised and popular presidents of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as well as the International Cricket Council (ICC) is a fitting tribute to the man who ruled the sport from his office at the Eden Gardens. And the money? Yes, he filled the coffers of the board and the pockets of the players. Game-changer, you may call him.

Dalmiya, 75, breathed his last at the BM Birla Heart Research Centre in Kolkata on Sunday, where he was hospitalised after suffering a heart attack on Thursday evening. The veteran administrator was also suffering from the Alzheimer's disease, meaning he could not recall or remember most things. His demise has left the BCCI, already in a mess, virtually headless. Expect the Pawars and Srinivasans, Thakurs and Shuklas to play their cards sooner than later.

The BCCI constitution says that if a president's post is vacated midway through his tenure, "the secretary shall, within a period of 15 days, convene a Special General Body Meeting (SGM) to elect the president, who shall be nominated by at least one full member from the zone, which proposed the name of the president whose term was cut short prematurely. Such a person, who is so elected, shall hold office till the next elections."

Going by the book, whoever wants to take Dalmiya's chair will have to be nominated by an association from East Zone (Bengal, Tripura, Jharkhand, Assam, Orissa and National Cricket Club).
