Nothing seems to be going right for Indian cricket all of a sudden. First, the Board of Control for Cricket in India's long-standing tussle with the International Cricket Council, add to that India's humiliating defeat against Australia in the first Test in Pune, and now in another bad news, Star has decided to not bid for the Indian team's jersey rights that come up for renewal in April. The current rights, which were won by Star in December 2013, end in March 2017.

"We have been very proud that our name is carried on the jersey of Team India. But given all the uncertainties, we have decided not to bid for it again. The commitments being asked for are too onerous without any clarity," Star India chairman and CEO Uday Shankar said according to a report in the Times of India.

Shankar also expressed his reservations about the BCCI losing it's power in world cricket and how it would be a disaster if India didn't participate in the up-coming Champions Trophy.

"If India doesn't participate in the Champions Trophy it would be bad for the tournament. But if India lose their voice or even if they are not playing a leading role, it would be disastrous for global cricket. The country that delivers the largest share of fans and also the largest share of money in global cricket should have a say in the critical affairs of the game," he said.

The team sponsorship rights allowed Star to be called the official team sponsor and also display a commercial logo on the men's and women's kits.
