After losing to Chile for the second consecutive time, Captain Lionel Messi on Monday announced that he is retiring from international football.
After the match got over, Messi said, "Argentina is over for me. I am taking this decision for me and the many people who want this. I've tried so hard, but I am leaving without managing it."
Messi was the first one to take penalty but missed it in the 0-0 final that proceeded to shootout. He looked devastated post-match and was seen in tears. This is shocking for the football world as the next World Cup is two years away. Twitter gets emotional after he announced his retirement. Here are some of the reactions:
I dont think Messi will actually retire. Probably heated right now lol i dont blame him I rather retire than have to play with Higuain again

Messi so childish leaving the national team over tonight's loss. So much class from the "best player in the world" guy is a joke

Just heard the Messi news. While I feel for his team's loss, his quitting is something I share no sympathy for. Cowardly to say the least.

Plain & simple I don't believe Messi will retire from playing for ARG. That's disappointment talking. He may take a break, but he'll be back

We've all said stupid things in the heat of the moment. For the sake of football let's hope Messi reconsiders international retirement.
