The timing seems to be a coincidence; NCP has given a deadline to Congress to meet its demands while 42 Congress MLAs have openly rebelled against Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. It seems some disgruntled members are upset with the CM’s style of functioning and have blamed him for being indecisive on various pending files. Is this NCP’s ploy to regain control of state affairs before the next elections? DNA finds out…

Chavan has put a stop to many shady projects of govt
The demand for change in state leadership by Congress MLAs is totally unjustifiable. Chief minister (CM) of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan, is in fact doing quite a good job. He has brought transparency and accountability in the functioning of the government. Since taking over as the state CM, he has put a stop to many shady matters of the government. Those Congress members who are rebelling against the CM have vested interests.
Anyone who wants to follow the rules and laws is bound to face opposition. The complaint that CM is slow in his decision is rather relative. Taking quick decisions does not necessarily mean making correct ones. The situation in Maharashtra is such that anyone who becomes a CM here will face the same problems. The mess is happening because of internal political issues, basically a tussle between the Congress-NCP alliance.

People with vested interest are rebelling against chief minister
There is a gap between the politics of Prithviraj Chavan and state MLAs. The administrative politics of Chavan is not acceptable by the state MLAs and there is bound to be a conflict because Chavan belongs to Congress. His leadership is related to the Centre. Such a situation arose in Maharashtra earlier also. The state leader is following and abiding by Centre’s policy decisions. The main reason behind the CM’s indecisiveness is because the state is going through a corruption phase. If any decision is taken on any of the files, the news will be out in open through the media and the public will immediately come to know how the funds are being embezzled through shady projects. A bureaucrat, who is a technocrat with a clean image, Chavan has his own way of taking decisions.

This rebellion against Chavan can also be the work of someone who has vested interest of being the state chief minister. Seizing this opportunity, some party members grouped together to rebel against the state leadership. Looking at the political situation, even if Sharad Pawar takes over he too will be indecisive. In fact, even prime minister Manmohan Singh is unable to take concrete decisions.

NCP’s latest move and rebel of Congress MLAs might be related
It is no more a secret that NCP and Congress members are unhappy and uncomfortable with each other, especially in the context of the upcoming state and Lok Sabha elections. The NCP’s latest move and the rebellion of Congress MLAs might be related given the complexity of Sharad Pawar’s relations with Congress. In spite of his love-hate relationship with Congress, Pawar still remains a Congressman at heart. But the question is why the Congress MLAs chose this moment to rebel against Prithviraj Chavan? The coincidence just seems too obvious.

Decisions are being delayed as discrepancy exists in files
Looking at the way the Congress-NCP alliance is going, I don’t think change in the state leadership will make any difference. This is an internal party problem. If due to various constraints quick decisions are not being taken then the CM must think over the issue.

It is quite possible that NCP is putting pressure because the CM has stopped illegitimate projects. One must think that if the CM is not taking quick decisions then it means some discrepancies exists in these pending files and he isn’t convinced about them. So, why should he be held responsible for taking an informed decision? At this juncture, even if Prithviraj Chavan is replaced by someone else, it won’t change the situation drastically.
In my opinion, the decisions taken by Congress-NCP alliance are wrong. The whole issue is an internal NCP-Congress power game. As far as Chavan is concerned, he is not new to politics and has a vast political experience.

Some corrupt members of Congress are disgruntled
Till now, the state Congress party was ritualistically following the orders issued by the high command in Delhi. For the removal of chief minister also, the support of high command is needed. The rebel by 42 Congress MLAs this time seems to be different. It looks like some of the corrupt members of the party are disgruntled. We have to understand that chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has not come by popular demand. As the CM, he prompted investigation into the Adarsh scam. May be that is why few of the MLAs fearing exposure have decided to support former state CM, Ashok Chavan.

Now if the high command backs the present CM, this in-party issue will be resolved within no time. Surprisingly, Sharad Pawar wants to take advantage of the situation and he might allow the protesting MLAs to join Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This is nothing but using pressure tactics to force the CM to take quick decisions on the pending files without reading them as was practiced by former CMs.
