While GoPro is still the go-to brand in the action cam market, competitor models don't have much to envy of the historic leader. Some now even film 360-degree ultra-high-definition video. Before heading for the slopes, here's a look at five of the best compact sports camcorders currently on the market for capturing the action.

1. GoPro Hero5 Black

The new-gen version of GoPro's star camera sees the arrival of voice control. It's therefore possible to start filming or take a photo simply by telling the camera to do so. The Hero5 Black promises high resistance to withstand the elements and is waterproof to 10 meters. It can film 4K video at 30 frames per second and takes 12-Megapixel photos.

2. Sony FDR-X3000R

As well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC support, this new mini camcorder from Sony stands out with its Zeiss lens and optical image stabilization system (B.O.S.S.), which promises to help capture sharp images even when the camera's not being held steady. It can film 4K video and has a time-lapse mode.

3. TomTom Bandit

Compact and waterproof to 40 meters, this sporty camcorder from TomTom also films ultra-high-definition video, but only at 15 frames per second. It takes 16-Megapixel photos too. The manufacturer promises three hours of battery life in Full HD mode.

4. Samsung Gear 360

Anyone looking to capture the action with 360-degree video can grab Samsung's Gear 360 and watch back the results with a 3D headset like the Gear VR. It also films regular video by using just one of the two onboard 180-degree cameras. It can film ultra-high-definition video and takes 30-Megapixel photos.

5. Nikon KeyMission 360

Nikon has released a new compact and lightweight camcorder that's shock-resistant, dustproof and waterproof to 30 meters. It can film 360-degree video in 4K resolution thanks to two ultra-wide-angle lenses. Its built-in software includes electronic vibration reduction to help keep the image stable no matter what you get up to.
