From the sci-fi excitement of "Mass Effect: Andromeda," "Halo Wars 2" and "Prey" to shooters "Bulletstorm: Full Clip" and "LawBreakers," as well as the mysterious, lavishly produced "Death Stranding" and new announcement "Dauntless."

A new and in-depth glimpse at "Mass Effect: Andromeda," fourth game in the series, was one of the highlights of The Game Awards as its trailer ran to nearly 5 minutes.

Offering exploration, conversation and combat to sci-fi colonists, "ME: Andromeda" also outlines a world of factions, alliances, bustling outposts and remote prospects.

Another high profile preview came by way of "Death Stranding."

From the studio and creative director behind the influential "Metal Gear Solid" franchise, this "Death Stranding" trailer is cryptic and beguiling in typical Kojima style while introducing Mads Mikkelsen playing one of the game's characters.

A commentated eight-minute preview detailing the open-ended approach of sci-fi alien infiltration game "Prey" was also shown, rebooting a series that started in 2006.

Another returnee was represented by way of "Bulletstorm: Full Clip", a remastering of 2011's original that has developed something of a cult following in the years since.

Gearbox Software of "Borderlands" fame is handling the update; fans of the original will be hoping for an adaptation whose quality is closer to that of "Homeworld" than the less well appreciated "Duke Nukem Forever" or "Aliens: Colonial Marines."

"Halo Wars 2" has a cache of its own (cinematic trailer, its 2009 predecessor spun off from the Xbox-centric shooter franchise and expertly proving that strategy games can work on console as well as on PC; a "Halo Wars" remake was announced for December 20.

Also in the core gaming space, two online multiplayer titles were shown.

Action game "Dauntless" made its debut with a cinematic teaser.

And "Lawbreakers," whose creative director drove the popular "Gears of War" franchise for many years, was at first known as free-to-play before switching back to a more conventional retail model this year.

The Game Awards allowed for another opportunity to become acquainted with its freewheeling style -- something it'll need in order to take on this year's outstanding "Overwatch" -- as well as a new character and a new arena.
