Looping profile video, time-bound profile pictures and more design changes are on the way.
Facebook has had plenty of updates over the years to the Newsfeed, Timeline, and privacy settings on the websites, but users' profile have largely stayed the same. Not anymore; Facebook announced in a blog post yesterday that it's bringing a load of changes to how profiles appear and can be customised. So sit, back and take in all these glorious improvements.
We've long since been able to watch videos right in our timeline, with a customised player to boot. The next step, according to Facebook, is obviously profile videos. That's right, now you can, instead of a picture, upload a looping video on your profile.
Another addition is time-constrained profile pictures. You'll soon be able to set a version of your profile (for instance, the Celebrate Pride rainbow tint) that will automatically revert after a specified amount of time. That way you can, for example, upload a picture of yourself on vacation, and it'll even tell people how long you'll be out too.
There's also improved profile controls, allowing you to fine tune what information you want people to see. You can individually make your workplace, birthday, location etc. publicly viewable. In addition Facebook has also added a new one-line "Bio" field, similar to what you enter in your Twitter profile.
And lastly, Facebook has redesigned the mobile view for their Facebook app, increasing the size of the profile picture and putting it front-and-center. They've also made changes to more easily access the allowed photos and mutual friends on someone's profile, putting them right at the top. All these changes are currently being tested for a number of iPhone users in the UK and California, and Facebook will be rolling them out to more people soon.
