Sony Interactive Entertainment is expected to reveal a significant step up from the PlayStation 4 console, the PlayStation 4 Neo, at an event on September 7.

An official PlayStation Meeting event set for 3pm on September 7 in New York City is expected to mark the unveiling of the PlayStation 4 Neo, according to reports from Gameblog (French) and Vice Gaming.

Such an announcement would also fall in line with previous practice, which saw the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 consoles unveiled at irregular instances of the PlayStation Meeting.

Suggestions of a PlayStation 4 Neo, PlayStation 4k or PlayStation 4.5 surfaced in March 2016, in the lead-up to the industry's Game Developers Conference and ahead of a more public Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June.

It is expected to support higher-fidelity visuals to the 4K resolution standard, for both gaming and media playback.

The PlayStation Meeting has been announced following the retail launch of Microsoft's revised Xbox One S, with the Xbox division planning its own significant console overhaul, a work in progress called Project Scorpio, for late 2017. Meanwhile, Nintendo is expected to reveal its March 2017 console, the NX, the week of September 12.

The PlayStation event is also set in advance of the launch of PlayStation's home virtual reality kit, PlayStation VR, in October. As such, the PlayStation 4 Neo could be presented and made available as the ideal machine to power Sony's virtual reality kit.

Two virtual reality headsets for Windows computers launched earlier in 2016, the $599 (about Rs 40,000) Oculus Rift and $799 (about Rs 53,400 ) HTC Vive, and both require hefty computers to power them; it's thought that the $399 (about Rs 26,600) PSVR would likewise benefit from an upgraded PlayStation 4.

For that, though, the Neo would be better off arriving at retail during Fall 2016 and while Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House expressed admiration for Apple's "available now" approach to product launches (after Xbox's Phil Spencer announced Scorpio over a year in advance), neither Gameblog nor Vice Gaming referred to an imminent retail launch.
